On the 7 of September 2026, the High Commissioner presented his global human rights update to the Council, warning that more than 60 wars are currently underway, the highest number since World War II, alongside deepening polarisation, climate chaos and disruptive technological change, and calling for renewed efforts toward accountability, mediation and sustainable peace.

Throughout this session, the Mission of the Sovereign Order of Malta will take part in the Council’s work on the enjoyment of human rights by older persons, water and sanitation, Palestine, and the High Commissioner’s update on Ukraine.
