On 25 February, the President of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly (PGA), H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang, opened the session. He mentioned the need to implement the Pact for the Future and the 80th anniversary of the UN and called to work to implement the priorities actively. Yang continued by explaining the work of the 79th session of the General Assembly, which emphasized the need for service at the national and international levels, as well as the importance of diplomacy. Mr. Yang’s three priorities for the 79th session of the GA are gender equality, multilingualism and dialogue.

The meeting finished with a Q&A session. China asked about the issue of AI, and a member of the mission expanded on it, mentioning the digital gap between the Global North and the Global South. Two delegations asked about Security Council reform and revitalization of the General Assembly. Other countries called for better implementation of the Pact for the Future through improved collaboration. In addressing AI, the Chief of Staff of the PGA responded that the issue is twofold: the constructive use of AI and the ethical aspects of the issue. He stated that there is scope for the HRC to address the latter. He also responded positively to the calls for change in the Security Council and mentioned that there are solutions in the works from regional groups. The PGA concluded by explaining that the Pact for the Future is a process that can help solve the ongoing liquidity crisis.
