Statement by Jean-François Kammer, Deputy Permanent Observer, 8 March 2024
Jean Francois Kammer, Deputy Permanent Observer, addressed on the 8th of March 2024 the United Nations Human Rights Council’s 55th regular session (HRC55) in Geneva, highlighting the Sovereign Order of Malta’s support for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ report on combating intolerance.
Kammer emphasised the indispensability of freedom of religion and expression as foundational human rights, denouncing any form of intolerance, stigmatisation, and violence based on religious beliefs as unacceptable. He stressed the collective duty to fight hatred, underlining the necessity to not only protect places of worship as physical entities but to recognise their role in sustaining human rights, community cohesion, social harmony, and tolerance.
Furthermore, the Deputy Permanent Observer applauded the initiatives by states and faith-based organisations in advancing interfaith dialogue and actions, pointing out that education, including faith literacy, is crucial in countering religious hatred and enhancing understanding. He praised the concrete, positive steps taken over the past year, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s organisation of a Parliamentary Conference in Marrakesh focused on interfaith dialogue.
Finally, Kammer emphasised that addressing hate speech and violence related to religious freedom is fundamental to promoting inclusivity, equal rights for all, and, ultimately, upholding the basic dignity of every individual. This statement underscores the Sovereign Order of Malta’s commitment to combating religious intolerance and fostering a more inclusive, equitable global society.
