HRC 55th session – Statement ID on environment

Gregory Tutton, Counsellor at the Permanent Observer Mission to the UN in Geneva, expressed the Sovereign Order of Malta’s deep concern about climate change’s impacts during the 55th Human Rights Council session on the 6th of March, 2024.

Highlighting the severe effects of climate extremes on vulnerable populations, Tutton underscored the necessity of combining humanitarian work with environmental resilience initiatives. Malteser International, the Order’s relief agency, faces climate-induced challenges across multiple countries, impacting health, food security, and displacement. Tutton advocated for global access to science and technology to enhance climate resilience, pledging continued collaboration to promote the right to a healthy environment globally.

Furthermore, Tutton expressed that the Sovereign Order of Malta applauds the Council’s acknowledgment of the right to a safe and sustainable environment, emphasising the importance of international efforts in combating climate change to uphold this right.

The Sovereign Order of Malta is looking forward to continuing works with the international community to ensure member states have the ability to address climate change and the opportunity to enjoy a safe, clean, healthy, and sustainable environment with all their citizens.
