HC Annual Report – Statement by the Ambassador

On the 19th of June 2024, H.E. Ambassador Marie-Thérèse Pictet-Althann, Permanent Observer, intervened during the Interactive Dialogue on the Presentation of the High Commissioner’s Annual Statement during the HRC 56th session.

The Ambassador underlined the necessity of a multifaceted approach that includes legal, diplomatic, and operational strategies to improve human rights respect, particularly regarding access and delivery of humanitarian aid. This involves obtaining safe passage for humanitarian and medical staff, establishing safe zones for civilians and aid workers, and using innovative digital tools like remote assistance programs to ensure aid reaches those in need without physical delivery.

The Ambassador highlighted the High Commissioner’s comments on the situation in Gaza, reflecting these challenges. She called for this Council to strengthen international legal frameworks to ensure all parties in conflict adhere to IHL principles, enhance the capacity of local organisations and volunteers, and mobilise international and regional civil society organisations to pressure conflicting parties to respect human rights.

Implementing these strategies can significantly improve respect for human rights in conflict situations, ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in need and that their rights are protected.
