Statement ID with SR on Migrants
On the 25th of June 2024, Ms. Silvia Vandi, First Secretary, intervened during the Interactive Dialogue and introduced the Special Rapporteur’s report on the human rights of migrants, congratulating Mr. Gehad Madi on his appointment and expressing eagerness to engage with him.
Ms. Vandi emphasized the Order of Malta’s commitment to providing humanitarian relief to migrants, asylum-seekers, and refugees, and highlighted its active involvement in supporting migrant contributions and underscoring the benefits of migration.
For example, in southern Türkiye, Malteser International and the Independent Doctors Association (IDA) opened a physiotherapy center for Syrian refugees, offering services for disabled patients and psychosocial support to address stigmatization and post-traumatic stress. This center aims to meet health needs, overcome accessibility obstacles, and support integration into host communities, especially in light of the challenges compounded by the February 2023 earthquake.
In South Sudan, Malteser International addresses the needs of over half a million migrants fleeing Sudan since April 2023. In the northern district of Western Bahr el Ghazal, the organization has repaired wells to provide urgently needed drinking water and is working to improve livelihoods and skills through training for IDPs, refugees, and returnees.
The Order of Malta looks forward to following the Special Rapporteur’s future programme of work.
