56 th session – Statement ID JFK Extreme Poverty

On July 2nd, 2024, Mr. Jean-François Kammer addressed the Human Rights Council’s 56th session during the Interactive Dialogue on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, presenting the Order of Malta’s views on “Eradicating Poverty Beyond Growth.”

Mr. Kammer praised the Special Rapporteur’s report, agreeing that an economy focused solely on profit cannot fulfil the rights of those in poverty. He highlighted the upcoming Pact for the Future as an opportunity to prioritise human rights and combat inequalities. He also supported consultations on a post-growth approach to poverty eradication. He encouraged including faith-based organisations (FBOs) in this process, noting their human rights and humanitarian aid expertise.

Mr. Kammer stressed that fighting poverty successfully requires addressing both material and spiritual needs, as emphasised by FBOs.
