Statement – Hervé Arot on leprosy

On June 21st, 2024, Mr. Hervé Arot, representing the Sovereign Order of Malta’s CIOMAL Foundation, addressed the Human Rights Council’s 56th session during the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Leprosy (Hansen’s disease).

Mr. Arot welcomed Mrs. Beatriz Miranda-Galarza’s appointment as Special Rapporteur and strongly supported the priorities outlined in her report. He emphasised the Order of Malta’s long-term commitment to combating Hansen’s disease through healthcare and socioeconomic programs, particularly in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

Mr. Arot highlighted the CIOMAL Foundation’s experience in collaborating with the public sector, local communities, and advocacy groups. He focused on two key issues: facilitating the submission of complaints by Hansen’s disease-affected victims of human rights violations and implementing effective international cooperation, emphasising data sharing and proper funding for priority programs.
