On Tuesday, March the 18th, the Interactive Dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry (COI) on the Syrian Arab Republic took place. The COI’s report highlights human rights violations in Assad’s detention centers, the need to preserve evidence of mass graves, and Syria’s dire economic and humanitarian crisis. The commissioner stressed equal access to education, healthcare, and freedom of expression for all Syrians. Despite some progress, ongoing violence persists, particularly in coastal cities. He also condemned Israeli attacks and increased military activity in central and eastern Syria. Lastly, he expressed hope that the transitional government could pave the way for a better future. The present delegations called for equal treatment of people regardless of their ethnicity, religion, or gender and for the inclusion of women in decision-making processes. H.E. Amb. Marie-Thérèse Pictet-Althann made a statement to express the support to the COI’s engagement and the Order of Malta’s assistance in Syria and Lebanon. Hanny Megally, a member of the COI, encouraged member states to coordinate their efforts to support Syria. He concluded by reaffirming the two main roles of the COI: monitoring all parties and maintaining a vast database and research initiative into conduct and abuses.
